Some Facts about Cataracts You Should Know

Cataracts are defined as the clouding of the eye lens; it is a painless condition. It is common among people over 65 and usually develops in both eyes. The symptoms include progressively poor vision, blurriness, difficulty seeing at night time, problems with bright lights, frequent changes in the prescription glasses or lenses, fading colours, and double vision. Cataracts can be easily removed and the vision of the individual can be restored. The surgical procedures are of two types: a standard cataract surgery and refractive cataract surgery. In both procedures, the natural lens is removed and replaced with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL). Refractive cataract surgery also corrects other vision problems including that of near- and far-sightedness. Cataract surgeries are quite common and take about 20-minutes. The surgery is pain-free although the healing process from the surgery may include some discomfort. However, this should not cause you to delay a cataract surgery. Millions of people have their natural lenses replaced each year and if you can afford them, treatments are also available tailor-made to your particular needs. After the surgery, people can participate in everyday activities almost immediately. Of course, care is required during the healing process. Cataracts are more common than you may think. Quite often, people find themselves surprised that they have developed cataracts. It is advised that proactive eye care is better than reactive eye care. Get your eyes tested every six months; this allows for early detection of any diagnoses and their early resolution. Avoid spending too much time on screen and reduce the use of gadgets late into the night. A slight modification in old habits is a good point to begin. Therefore, do not wait until you develop an eye condition that affects the quality of your life. Instead become proactive about your health and you will begin to see the difference.
