Signs That Indicate You are at Risk for Type II Diabetes
Type 2 Diabetes has become a major epidemic in the modern-day. If you have a family member that suffers from diabetes, then you should watch out for any of the following symptoms for yourself:
1. Overweight
If you are weighing above the average weight according to the BMI, you have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This is also the case for children. So make sure that on the next visit to the pediatrician you get your child tested for type 2 diabetes. The test involves screening the blood serum for high glucose levels. If the blood glucose level is high, your doctor/pediatrician will sort it out for you accordingly. In some cases, you may be advised to visit an endocrinologist. But all is not lost! Studies show that maintaining your body weight can actually reduce the risk of developing diabetes.
2. Frequent Urination
When a person develops diabetes, the hormone insulin is not produced in enough quantities. This leads to the build-up of glucose in the bloodstream. In order to regulate, the body releases this excess glucose through the urine. Because you are losing more water, you are also likely to feel thirstier and drink more water than usual.
3. Blurry Vision
High sugar levels in the body begin to show up in the lens of the eyes. This leads to a blurry vision and difficulty in focusing.
4. Underweight
People with diabetes are prone to losing weight because their bodies are unable to process sugar. This means that the cells are not able to store energy. To compensate, the body uses other building materials such as fat and proteins leading to loss of muscle mass and weight loss.
5. Dark ring around the neck
In type 2 diabetes, the body starts manufacturing too many insulin receptors causing the skin to respond. This shows up as a pigmentation around the neck.
6. Yeast infections
A build-up of glucose in the body can cause yeast growth, vaginal itching, and thick discharge. This needs to be treated immediately. In children, this can appear as a diaper rash but is really a yeast infection. In boys, there can be a yeast infection in the urethra (urethritis).
If you find any of these symptoms, make sure you get yourself tested.
