Dental Problems that Cause Gum Pain

Dental Problems that Cause Gum Pain

Here are a few reasons why pain develops in the jaw:

1. Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction
While it is not life-threatening, the TMD can affect the quality of life. The dysfunction develops in the jawbone and can cause tenderness, pain, difficulty in opening and closing the mouth, and an inflamed side of the face. Over-the-counter medicines, hot/cold packs, and relaxation therapy can help manage the pain. For prolonged results, a dental exam is recommended. Dentists usually correct bite problems, include medications and suggest night guards to prevent the TMD from developing further.

2. Teeth Grinding
Teeth grinding is a common ailment which develops from a combination of psychological, genetic, and physical factors. Grinding is usually prevented with the help of night guards or splints that separate the teeth. If unattended, teeth grinding can result in damaging the teeth, exposing the dentin due to enamel damage, tooth sensitivity, headaches, and jaw disorders. Relaxation therapy and medications are also useful.

3. Gum Disease and Cavities
Infection in the gums can aggravate the pain in the jaws. Periodontal disease, which causes pain while chewing, receding gums, bleeding, and swollen gums, can result in severe jaw pain. A visit to the doctor to treat the gums and maintaining a healthy diet is suggested. Untreated cavities can lead to spread of infection among the bone tissues thereby leading to jaw pain. Regular dental check-ups are essential to detect cavities.

4. Impacted Wisdom Tooth
Partially or fully impacted wisdom teeth can attract infections causing pain and swelling around the area. Extraction of the impacted tooth is suggested but the infection may still take a while to clear up. This can lead to the pain in the jaw area, aggravated when eating and talking.
Regular dental check-ups help in monitoring the development of dental disorders that affect jaw pain.
